Bi-weekly E.coli Testing for Lost Creek & Spring River

By: Wrandi Clayton, Water Quality Officer

The Eastern Shawnee Environmental Department is testing for Escherichia coli (E.coli) in Lost Creek and Spring River.  The testing started the first of May and will continue twice a week until the end of September.  These tests are used as indicators to possible stream contamination.  The Environmental Department follows EPA recommended guidelines of E.coli levels for full body contact recreation/swimming.  If tests indicate high levels of the bacteria swimming advisories will be posted in buildings and at the sample sites.

E.coli is a bacterium that lives in the intestines humans and animals. It is necessary for the proper digestion of food but its presence in surface water indicates fecal contamination.  Humans, livestock, wildlife, and pets can all act as contributors for the introduction of fecal coliforms such as E.coli.  E.coli can find its way into the river from water that flows over land and into the river or contaminated waters flowing through outfalls to the river.

Some strains of the E.coli are harmless to humans, but some can cause severe illness.  The most common illness associated with swimming in contaminated water is gastroenteritis.  Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomachache, diarrhea, headache, and fever.  Other minor illnesses associated with swimming include ear, eye, nose, and throat infections.

To avoid becoming ill, the best thing to do is avoid swimming in water with high bacteria levels. If you do go in, don't get the water in your mouth. Wash your hands afterward especially before eating, and don't take food near the water. Be sure to take a shower after swimming.  Also clean any items or toys that were in contact with the water.
